Prime Rib Buffet

About twice a month I get to enjoy an $11.75 all-you-can-eat prime rib buffet down at the Navy sub base - a well kept secret since you need security clearance just to get on the base.  It's this beautiful place located on the water of San Diego Bay beside the submarines and other aquatic vessels and across the bay from downtown.  It's a great view.  But as far as this blog is concerned, the real good stuff is inside where you can eat as much prime rib/mashed potatoes as you like for about 12 bucks.  I mean come on - what's better, the value or the food?  Just the thought gets me excited.

So it was about a week and a half go when I last went and downed three steaks (my record is four) and then subsequently got sick for a week with a cold.  I'm not sure if they're related.

Since photography is prohibited in the Navy base (and possibly the Sub base but I'm not sure) there are no photographs for this venture, so enjoy this one of a prime rib roast I got off the net.


It pretty much looks exactly like this; you go up to the chef and he cuts you a roughly 10 ounce slice as many times as you want.  It's great.

Jared From Subway Sucks

Dude can't even make his own sandwiches.


This sandwich was so good I wish I had another one right now.  This one contains grilled London broil, honey smoked turkey, turkey pastrami, lettuce, tomato, thin spreads of mayo/mustard, salt/pepper, Italian seasoning, balsamic vinegar, and a hint of horseradish to enhance the flavor.

Los Angeles Rams of St. Louis of Anaheim of Southern California of Los Angeles County of Rick Astley of Los Angeles Metropolitan Area

In honor of this past Super Bowl, I wanted to share a collection of glasses that were recently unearthed from a family storage locker in Los Angeles, CA:



The Rams left the LA area for St. Louis following the 1994 and subsequently appeared in a couple Super Bowls, winning it all in 1999.  These glasses probably haven't seen the light of day in just as long, but let me tell you --- these are some fine drinking devices.  Stylish, deceivingly small (each glass is roughly the equivalent of one can of soda), and they make for good conversation material.

And just a random thought here: Farmer's Insurance recently forked over $700 million for the naming rights to a new stadium in downtown LA in an effort to bring the NFL back to the City of Angels.  I find it kind of funny that the health insurance industry claims to be "forced" to raise our premiums due to "rising costs," yet manage to mysteriously find a few hundred million dollars laying around to name a football stadium.  Just sayin'.

What's the Difference Between Red Vines and Cherry Vines?

This is a question I found myself asking upon walking into a San Diego CVS when I found these:


I can't remember a time where I actually had Cherry Vines.  I know I've seen them before but it never really registered that they were significantly different from the traditional Red Vines.  They're still pretty good - tastes a lot like Twizzlers.  

But the question is --- if these are cherry, then what flavor are the original Red Vines considered?  Red Vines' brief Wikipedia page says they were originally raspberry up until 1952 when they were changed to simply "original" and comparable to Twizzlers...except Twizzlers are more comparable to the Cherry Vines.  

I'm stumped.  If you have an idea what the flavor of the "original Red Vines" is, let me know.

Gourmet Classics: The Peanut Butter Burger

A new feature to this blog is going to be to post pictures of the food that has made its mark and endured the test of time to still be relevant today.  What the hell does that mean?  It means the food was either so good or so interesting that it still makes for a good story today.  As you can see from the title, a peanut butter burger will most likely make for an interesting story.

So here we have the Skippy Burger from Hamburger Patti's in Sacramento, CA:

Yes, that brown creamy substance is peanut butter.  On a slab of beef.  With fried potatoes.  Due to my compulsiveness to try interesting things, I simply had to try this burger and it actually wasn't half bad.  Mid-way through I started to feel the effects of a peanut butter gooped piece of beef, at which I point I added ketchup and mustard to balance things out.  

Overall this was surprisingly not bad, but I wouldn't have it again.
